Plastic Bag Landscapes
At first glance, Vilde Rolfsen’s series could be mistaken for photographs of beautifully lit ice caves or aerial shots of frozen landscapes. They are not photographs of the natural world however, but images of a scourge of our environment: the once ubiquitous plastic bag. Collected from the street, cleaned up, carefully lit and photographed in her studio, these everyday single-use items are used to create discomfort in viewers as they realise that these are not beautiful landscapes, but items that have an enormously negative effect upon our landscapes and environment. With the success of the 2015 plastic bag charge in the UK, that saw 6 billion fewer bags handed out in the first six months following the introduction of the 5 pence charge, we hope that the message that society doesn’t need these bags is getting through. The next target? Single use plastic bottles.
